Residency Year

Master’s Degree

  • The NYC Department of Education subsidizes most of the cost of tuition at one of our partnering universities. Residents are not responsible for paying tuition during their residency year; however, each Resident is responsible for contributing towards their master’s degree, and the amount will be deducted over time from the Resident’s regular paycheck once they secure a full-time teaching position.
  • August 2012 Residents will contribute $6,600 towards their degree over the course of the program..
  • The degree takes between two and three years to complete, depending on each Resident’s academic background.  Learn more about the subsidized master’s degree.

Securing a Teaching Position

  • Residents will secure full-time teaching positions within a specific set of district public schools identified by the NYC Department of Education as low performing schools that are working to turnaround their school’s performance.
  • To support Residents in their job search, the NYC Teaching Residency program will provide Residents with guidance, tools, and access to events that will help Residents to connect with hiring representatives and available positions within these schools. Learn more about securing a teaching position.

Salary and Benefits

  • During the residency year, Residents will work as apprentice teachers and earn a salary in accordance with applicable agreements between the NYC Department of Education and the United Federation of Teachers (UFT), the local teachers’ union.  The current salary for teacher apprentices is $22,500.
