Our Mission and Values
Every student in New York City deserves to be taught by great teachers. Despite success in raising the overall quality of our teaching force, many schools in our highest need communities still struggle to attract and retain great teachers. The NYC Teaching Residency is working to overcome this challenge by providing New York City’s lowest performing schools with access to a pool of passionate teachers who are prepared to take leadership in turning around student performance as part of a schoolwide improvement effort.
Our Mission
The mission of the NYC Teaching Residency program is to recruit and prepare talented, committed individuals to become effective teachers who dedicate themselves to raising student achievement and driving change as part of a school turnaround strategy in New York City's lowest performing schools.
A School-Embedded Training Experience
NYC Teaching Residents learn the essentials of great teaching while fully immersed in a NYC public school community for one school year. Within each training school site, Residents will learn from and work alongside a highly skilled Resident Teacher Mentor as an apprentice teacher in their classroom. Residents will also benefit from the support of a small cohort of fellow Residents in their school. In addition, a program staff member will work with the Residents at each school to provide additional training and guidance. Through this yearlong, practice-based training program, NYC Teaching Residents will develop into effective teachers and school leaders. Residents are held to high standards and are provided with regular and ongoing feedback from their Resident Teacher Mentor and the program staff in order to ensure their ability to realize significant academic gains for their students.
A Commitment to Raising Student Achievement

The NYC Teaching Residency program is committed to ensuring that our Residents are prepared to raise student achievement in the highest need classrooms in New York City. Throughout the school year, Residents are trained in teaching strategies proven to be successful in turning around school performance. During their residency year, Residents also engage in university coursework toward a Master of Science in Adolescent Education that is tailored to support their work towards turning around low performing schools and will provide a foundation for a lifelong career in education.
Create Successful Learning Communities
By teaching in low-performing public schools in New York City that are working to turnaround school performance, Residents will help to drive positive change in their school community and create an environment in which all students can learn. Residents will work in partnership with staff within their schools to implement policies and programs that foster a culture of success. Residents will become an integral part of a network of educators committed to transforming low-performing schools and will help to ensure that all NYC students receive the excellent education they deserve.
